History
Arjumand Banu Begum married the third son of Jehangir, prince Khurram who loved her more than anything else in the world. In 1628, Khurram became king after a merciless battle and took the name of Shahjahan.
In1631, accompanying her husband on a military expedition to the south, Mumtaz Mahal died while giving birth to their 14th child.
It is said that the emperor was crushed because of her death and their was mourning in the palace for two years. Shah Jahan now decided to erect the most beautiful mausoleum in the world for his wife, which was her last wish.
The construction of the Taj Mahal began in 1633 on the banks of river Yamuna where 20,000 workers labored for 17 years to complete the incredible monument.
Stone carvers, inlay craftsmen and workers were summoned from distant places such as Persia, Turkey and Baghdad.
