BCCI Confirms Rishabh Pant and Staff Member Test Positive for Covid-19

Indian batsman Rishabh Pant had tested positive for Covid-19 on July 8 and is nearing the end of his self-quarantine period while training assistant and net pitcher Dayanand Garani has also tested positive for Covid -19, the Cricket Control Board in India said Thursday.

The Indian men’s team, during their tour of England, were on a three-week hiatus following the conclusion of the ICC World Trials Championship final held in Southampton against New Zealand.

“Pant, who had not stayed at the team hotel during the break, tested positive on July 8. He is asymptomatic and is currently undergoing self-isolation where he tested positive. He is closely watched by the BCCI medical team and is on the mend. He will be able to join the team in Durham after returning two negative RT-PCR tests, ”the board said in a statement.

The board said the medical team identified Bharat Arun (bowling coach), Wriddhiman Saha and Abhimanyu Easwaran as close contacts of Garani, who was at the team’s hotel when he was tested positive following RT-PCR testing on July 14. The four of them will undergo 10-day isolation and stay in their respective rooms at the team’s hotel in London.

“The entire Indian contingent, including traveling family members and guards, received the second dose of the covid vaccine earlier this month in London. To mitigate any additional risk, the Indian contingent passes the lateral flow test daily, ”added the BCCI statement issued by Secretary Jay Shah.

Earlier Thursday, PTI reported that Pant had contracted the Delta variant, leading to an increase in the number of cases in England. The 23-year-old had attended the England semi-final match at the Euro 2020 game at Wembley according to a post on Instagram.

The report added that Shah had, in a letter to the team, told players to “avoid” overcrowded places because Covishield, the vaccine that was given to the team, only offered protection. , not full immunity to the virus. The report further states that Shah specifically said players should avoid going to the Wimbledon and Euro Championships, both of which recently ended in London.

India are set to face England in a five-game test series starting August 4. The India-England showdown marks the start of the second round of the World Testing Championship. Virat Kohli and Co will start their preparations with a three-day warm-up match at Emirates Riverside against County XI from Tuesday.

Pant, Easwaran and Saha will miss the training match due to start on July 20 against a county combined team with the two players Bengal and Arun in a 10-day isolation. KL Rahul will be expected to keep wickets in this case.

Recently, the England team were also hit by the virus and were forced to field a totally different XI in a limited series game against Pakistan.
