India tour in South Africa: Zaheer Khan gives valuable advice to underachieving Ajinkya Rahane ahead of test round

New Delhi: Ajinkya Rahane’s performance in the game’s longest format has been worrying as one of India’s best batsmen in red-ball cricket has averaged just 24 in the last 16 Tests. He led the team in the first Test against New Zealand which ended in a draw and the former Rajasthan Royals hitter managed to score a maximum of 35 in the opening innings. “There were mixed performances for Ajinkya Rahane. There is no doubt about that. He is under immense pressure. This is the fact. For any cricketer, to go through that kind of phase, you have to have that mental toughness to get out of it. The good part is that you’re still around and you’re one round away. As a batsman or a cricketer, you should have such a belief,” Zaheer Khan told India time. “In my personal experience, if someone is going through a tough time, you have to have the belief that you’re just one inning or one hit away from that good performance. If you touch that, things change. also very fast. That’s what I would advise Ajinkya at this stage. As a cricketer, you have to accept these challenges and meet them head-on,” the 2011 World Cup-winning pacemaker advised.
