India travel rules: Entry requirements explained as international flights resume

As the Easter holidays approach, millions of people are taking the opportunity to embark on overseas trips. Destinations around the world have relaxed coronavirus travel rules in a bid to encourage more people to travel.

As the world opens up to travel again, many of us will take the opportunity to get away from it all or simply visit loved ones abroad. Many people will have waited to travel to India, which has virtually halted international flights during the pandemic.

The Indian government recently gave the green light to international flights after suspending them for two years, opening up the country to foreign visitors. But what are the current travel rules for people wishing to visit India?

What are the travel rules for India?

According to the UK government’s official travel guidelines for India, anyone arriving in the country must complete a self-declaration form through Air Suvidha’s online portal before travelling. International travelers to India no longer need to test or quarantine themselves upon arrival.

People traveling to India are also no longer required to take a PCR test on the eighth day after arrival. Instead, they are simply required to self-monitor for 14 days.

However, some arrivals may be subject to random testing at airports and all passengers will be required to undergo thermal screening. Those who test positive may need to be placed in institutional quarantine and symptomatic arrivals may be taken to a medical facility.

Can you travel to India without being vaccinated?

Unvaccinated people traveling to India must upload a negative PCR test result – taken no later than 72 hours before their outbound journey – before travelling. They must also sign a statement that the report is authentic; if it is proven otherwise, they expose themselves to prosecution.
